Ensuring Fertilisation with IUI Techniques

Intra Uterine Insemination, popularly called IUI is a treatment for infertility where the sperm collected from the male partner is artificially placed in the woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilisation. With a success rate ranging from about 18 % to 25 %, the method is a popular technique in ART (Artificial Reproduction Technique).

A procedure that is less invasive and less expensive than IVF, IUI aims at increasing the probability of fertilisation by artificially providing the sperm with a head start. However, the process of fertilisation occurs in the normal way unlike IVF. It just gets the advantage of having to travel less distance.

Scope of IUI

Although the Intra Uterine Insemination is popularly used in cases of decreased sperm count or mobility, they are used in other conditions as well. They are as follows: -
  • Unexplained cases of infertility
  • Ejaculation dysfunction in male
  • While using donor sperms
  • Low count of sperm in semen
  • Decreased mobility of sperm
  • Hostile cervical conditions leading to lack of fertilisation due to damage to sperm
  • Formation of scar tissues in cervix due to prior surgeries
The procedure of IUI cannot be performed in women with damaged fallopian tubes, history of pelvic infections or those affected by severe endometriosis.

IUI Procedure

The procedure of IUI involves the stimulation of ovulation, also called ovulation induction in the woman. This can be done with the help of medications or hormone therapies. The ovulation process is closely monitored and once the eggs are matured enough, IUI procedure is initiated.

The semen sample collected from the man is washed to separate the sperm. The collected sperm is then directly placed in the womb with the help of a catheter inserted into the uterine cavity through the vagina. The process helps in maximising the number of sperm cells that enters the uterus and ensures a better success rate of fertilisation.

Genesis Fertility Research Centre (GFRC) is distinguished for the efficiency and success of their treatment techniques for infertility.
