Ensuring Fertilisation with IUI Techniques

Intra Uterine Insemination, popularly called IUI is a treatment for infertility where the sperm collected from the male partner is artificially placed in the woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilisation. With a success rate ranging from about 18 % to 25 %, the method is a popular technique in ART (Artificial Reproduction Technique).

A procedure that is less invasive and less expensive than IVF, IUI aims at increasing the probability of fertilisation by artificially providing the sperm with a head start. However, the process of fertilisation occurs in the normal way unlike IVF. It just gets the advantage of having to travel less distance.

Scope of IUI

Although the Intra Uterine Insemination is popularly used in cases of decreased sperm count or mobility, they are used in other conditions as well. They are as follows: -
  • Unexplained cases of infertility
  • Ejaculation dysfunction in male
  • While using donor sperms
  • Low count of sperm in semen
  • Decreased mobility of sperm
  • Hostile cervical conditions leading to lack of fertilisation due to damage to sperm
  • Formation of scar tissues in cervix due to prior surgeries
The procedure of IUI cannot be performed in women with damaged fallopian tubes, history of pelvic infections or those affected by severe endometriosis.

IUI Procedure

The procedure of IUI involves the stimulation of ovulation, also called ovulation induction in the woman. This can be done with the help of medications or hormone therapies. The ovulation process is closely monitored and once the eggs are matured enough, IUI procedure is initiated.

The semen sample collected from the man is washed to separate the sperm. The collected sperm is then directly placed in the womb with the help of a catheter inserted into the uterine cavity through the vagina. The process helps in maximising the number of sperm cells that enters the uterus and ensures a better success rate of fertilisation.

Genesis Fertility Research Centre (GFRC) is distinguished for the efficiency and success of their treatment techniques for infertility.

Get Treatment For Infertility And Start Enjoying Your Parenthood

Although similar to ICSI, Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection or IMSI, is a much more enhanced procedure, aimed at selecting superior quality sperm for fertilisation. The IMSI procedure, an effective method to overcome male infertility, was developed for decreasing the failure rate in artificial fertilisation by selecting morphologically advanced sperms from male semen for fertilisation.

Once the sperm is selected, it is used to fertilise an egg by procedures similar to ICSI. This includes holding the egg in a pipette while the sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm of the egg. While the sperm is magnified 200 times for detecting any defects in its morphology, IMSI procedure magnifies it to about 7000 times.

Who Can Benefit From IMSI?

Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection is best suited for the following candidates
  • Men above the age of 40 years
  • Patients who have a high count of abnormal sperm
  • Patients facing a shortage of superior quality embryos
  • Couples facing previous history of miscarriages
  • Patients with a history of failed treatment cycles

IMSI Procedure

The magnification procedures involved in IMSI involves detection of morphological defects such as chromatin compaction defects and intra nuclear sperm defects, which are hard to detect with simpler methods of ICSI.

The procedure for IMSI involves collection of sperm and ovum from the couple during extraction techniques depending on the fertility conditions of the partners. The sperm is then analysed under a high-powered microscope and magnified to about 7000 times to detect irregularities.

A morphologically robust and good quality sperm is injected into the collected ovum through procedures similar to that of ICSI. The embryo, after fertilisation period ranging from 3 to 6 days, is implanted in the womb for conception of pregnancy.

Benefits Of IMSI

The benefits of IMSI are as follows: -
  • Ensures a high rate of successful pregnancy
  • Prevents miscarriages to a substantial extent
  • Helps in creation of superior quality embryo
