Intra Uterine Insemination, popularly called IUI is a treatment for infertility where the sperm collected from the male partner is artificially placed in the woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilisation. IUI Procedure

The procedure of IUI involves the stimulation of ovulation, also called ovulation induction in the woman. This can be done with the help of medications or hormone therapies. The ovulation process is closely monitored and once the eggs are matured enough, IUI procedure is initiated.

The semen sample collected from the man is washed to separate the sperm. The collected sperm is then directly placed in the womb with the help of a catheter inserted into the uterine cavity through the vagina. Although similar to ICSI, Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection or IMSI, is a much more enhanced procedure, aimed at selecting superior quality sperm for fertilisation. The IMSI procedure, an effective method to overcome male infertility, was developed for decreasing the failure rate in artificial fertilisation by selecting morphologically advanced sperms from male semen for fertilisation.

Once the sperm is selected, it is used to fertilise an egg by procedures similar to ICSI. This includes holding the egg in a pipette while the sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm of the egg. A morphologically robust and good quality sperm is injected into the collected ovum through procedures similar to that of ICSI. The embryo, after fertilisation period ranging from 3 to 6 days, is implanted in the womb for conception of pregnancy.
